Stile makes science lessons for schools, and teachers were spending hours writing test questions for them by hand. In a team of five, I built the Python and Flask backend for a tool that reads lesson content and generates curriculum-aligned questions automatically.

It uses two AI agents: one writes the questions and the other critiques them. I led the prompt engineering for both, tuning them to produce questions that match the curriculum and suit each year level, and proposed the scoring model that decides which questions are good enough to keep. Together, these turned a job that took hours into one that takes minutes.

I worked on the backend of the platform the bank's foreign exchange team uses to analyse trading data. It's a big-data system built on Java, SQL and Impala, with Spark and Hadoop pipelines feeding it.

One of the things I'm proudest of is taking a key analytics dashboard from minutes to load down to seconds by reworking the queries behind it. I also built a Java tool that backs up important reference tables the team maintained by hand, so they could be fully recovered if a server failed. Along the way I helped move the platform through a major migration and built new analysis tools as the team's needs changed.

InfraCloud maintains Fission, a framework for running serverless functions on Kubernetes, and I worked on it full time. I rebuilt its monitoring so every core service reports request counts and response times to Prometheus, made its message-queue triggers react to changes instantly instead of checking every five seconds, and added a new fission archive command for managing stored code packages.

I also fixed a bug where requests could be sent to function pods that had already died, and locked down pod permissions so users no longer got root access by default. By the end I had over 70 pull requests merged, wrote the release notes for Fission 1.16, and published two tutorials on the Fission blog: autoscaling with custom metrics and Kafka on Confluent Cloud.

This is where I got into open source. I built a connector that lets Fission functions be triggered by messages on a Redis queue, which was merged into the project. I also set up its automated testing with GitHub Actions and wrote the documentation, with examples so others could start using it.
